In July, we welcomed a beautiful puppy, named Li’l Hoss (Hoss for short), into our home and lives. He is an Italian Greyhound, Iggy for short, and a dog I’ve wanted for a very long time. And boy oh boy he is a cutie…and a ball of energy.
Hehehe, being an Owen Sound pet photographer (a.k.a dog photographer), I knew bringing home a puppy was going to change our lives (for the better), and I knew it was going to be a lot of work. Thus I wanted to do my research about the breed, and learn what to expect and prepare for. Friends and literature said it can be hard so I wanted to be fully prepared. BUT honestly, I wasn’t prepared at all. Puppies are a lot of work. Hehehe, this blog post is about things you can think about and do to prepare for your puppy…and in my next blog, I will enlighten you on my experience of brining home a puppy and what it’s really like 😉
I have included some professional photos of hoss and some candid photos I took with my cell phone…
Okay, in addition to making sure your current dog is okay with the new dog, here are 5 more things to consider and plan for when bringing home a puppy. Doing all 5 of these, will help ensure a smoother transition.
1. **Time Investment⏰**: Puppies demand significant attention, especially during their formative months. This includes not only daily feeding and exercise but also regular training sessions and socialization opportunities. Evaluate your schedule to ensure you can dedicate ample time and energy to meet these needs, fostering a nurturing environment for your new companion.
Hoss needs to go to the bathroom every few hours, so this became routine for us. And thankfully I am my own boss (I love being a pet photographer!), so I have structured my day so that I am able to be with him and let him out. Thus this definitely became a time investment. And we loved our daily walks in the summer…lol not so much now that it’s winter.
2. **Financial Planning💰**: Bringing a puppy into your home involves ongoing financial commitments. Beyond the initial adoption fees, you’ll need to budget for routine veterinary care, vaccinations, quality nutrition, grooming, and essential supplies such as bedding and toys. Planning for these expenses in advance will ensure you can provide the best care without financial strain.
I personally, got pet insurance for Hoss. Mostly because this breed is fragile and are known to break a leg. Thus, I have peace of mind knowing that his vet bills are covered it this ever happens. Knock on wood that it doesn’t.
3. **Adequate Space🏡**: Assess your living arrangements to confirm they are suitable for a puppy’s playful and exploratory nature. Whether you have a yard or live in an apartment, it’s important to create a safe and stimulating environment. Consider areas for play, rest, and training, ensuring your home supports your puppy’s growth and well-being.
We have a tiny house but Hoss loves to run around the living room and zoom in and out of other rooms. He especially loves our fenced in yard where he can run free and eat all the worms he can. Yep, he eats worms. This is the weirdest thing he does. At first I tried to stop him but quickly realized that wasn’t happening. lol. At least he’s not eating his own poo 😉
4. **Training & Development🐾**: Early training is crucial to developing a well-mannered and socialized dog. Prepare to invest in professional training classes if necessary, and be consistent with commands and routines at home. Socialization with other dogs and people will also play a vital role in your puppy’s behavioural development, helping them become a balanced and confident adult.
Hoss went to puppy class where he AND I learned basic commands to aid in his behavioural development and manners. AND the best part, he got to socialize with other puppies his own age.
5. **Long-term Commitment❤️**: Puppies grow into lifelong companions, often living 10 to 15 years or more. Reflect on your readiness for this enduring responsibility, considering how changes in your lifestyle or circumstances might impact your ability to care for your pet. A long-term commitment to your puppy’s health, happiness, and companionship is essential. 🐕✨
Bringing a puppy into your home is a profoundly rewarding experience, filled with joy and challenges. By preparing thoroughly, you can ensure a smooth transition and provide a loving, stable environment for your new furry family member.
